Norwegian Painter, 1845-1932 Norwegian painter. In the 1860s and early 1870s she took lessons in drawing and painting in Christiania (now Oslo) and also travelled extensively in Europe with her sister Agathe, a composer and pianist. She copied works in major museums and took occasional art lessons; she later considered this experience to have been of fundamental importance to her artistic development. Little Red Riding Hood (1872; Oslo, N.G.) is impressive in technique, and the early portrait of her sister, Agathe Backer-Grendahl (1874; Holmestrand, Komm.), shows a refined colour scheme. At the age of nearly 30 Backer decided to train professionally as a painter and in 1874 went to Munich. She was never attached to a particular institution, but the influence of her friend the artist Eilif Peterssen was crucial to her development. Jean Raoux
French Painter, 1677-1734, French painter. He trained first in Montpellier with Antoine Ranc (1634-1716), in whose studio he completed his early painting Ariadne on Naxos (1701; Montpellier, Mus. Fabre). He subsequently moved to the Paris studio of Bon Boullogne and in 1704 won the Prix de Rome with David Slaying Goliath (untraced). He completed his education at the Acad?mie de France in Rome and also spent time in Florence and Padua. For the Cathedral at Padua he executed an Annunciation and a Visitation (both in situ). In 1707-9 Raoux was in Venice, where he made contact with his future patron Philippe de Vendeme (1665-1727), Grand Prior of the Order of the Knights of Malta. From 1714 he lodged in the Grand Prior's Paris residence, the Temple, a privilege that was renewed in 1719 by Vendeme's successor Jean-Philippe,
Francesco Fontebasso
(4 October 1707 - 31 May 1769) was an Italian painter painter of the late-Baroque or Rococo period of Venice. He first apprenticed with Sebastiano Ricci, but was strongly influenced by his contemporary, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. In 1761, Fontebasso visited Saint Petersburg and produced ceiling paintings and decorations for the Winter Palace. Fontebasso returned to Venice in 1768. He helped decorate a chapel in San Francesco della Vigna. He died in Venice in 1769.
